Help please.

My computer recently stopped recognizing my cdrom drive. Any ideas on how to fix this? I haven't installed/uninstalled any new software/hardware recently (except itunes). When I check the device manager, it just says:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

I'm running windows xp prof. 2002. the cd-rw model is sony cd-rw CRX160E.

The bios recognizes that it's there, but windows doesn't.

any ideas?

Tricky. Can you boot the computer on the CD? Like if you have a Knoppix CD or some such. Knoppix runs all sorts of hardware checks at start-up naturally. Check it out on https://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html -- PEZ

You may want to try the solution described in the following article: https://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q314060 , the article does say that the problem occurs when you uninstall certain software, though, so I don't know if it applies to your problem as well. Remember to make backups when toying around with the windows registry! --Dummy

Yeah, Yeah! I just uninstalled itunes! It's probably itunes's fault!

You can bet your a** it is itunes! It is death to Win XP machines. At least the ones where I have tried it. Works like charm on the Mac though. Time to leave the dark side? -- PEZ

YAY! I fixed it, thanks Dummy!

I've been doing school work + college apps lately so I haven't had time to robocode. I hear back from MIT next week... Oh God I'm scared. --Mike Z
